How to split a PDF file
To split a PDF, drop the file into the box, choose a mode, and press Split PDF. Enter ranges like 1-3, 5, 8- to choose exactly which pages go into each new file, or split every N pages. SailPDF cuts the document on your device and gives you one PDF, or a ZIP when there are several.
Add your PDF
Choose a file or drop it into the box. The page count appears before anything is processed.
Choose the split
Use page ranges, every N pages, or one file per page. The preview shows each file you will get.
Split and download
Press Split PDF. One result downloads as a PDF, several download together as a ZIP.
What Split PDF does and does not do
Pages are copied as they are, so text stays selectable and links, annotations and form fields survive. Bookmarks are not rebuilt for the new documents, and a password-protected file must be unlocked first. Ranges are 1-based and inclusive: 1-3 means pages one, two and three. Up to 200 MB or 1000 pages per file; splitting every page of a very large document creates many files at once, so SailPDF caps a single split at 500 outputs.
Private by design
SailPDF splits files with code that runs in your browser. Your PDF is never sent to a server, so nobody else can see it.
Questions
How do I split a PDF into separate files?
Drop the PDF in the box, type the ranges you want — for example 1-3, 4-7 — and press Split PDF. Each range becomes its own file, and multiple files arrive as one ZIP.
Is splitting a PDF free?
Yes. There is no account, no watermark and no page limit on the tool itself. The only limits are the size of your file and your device memory.
What does a range like 8- mean?
An open range runs to the last page. 8- on a ten-page document means pages 8, 9 and 10. You can combine ranges and single pages: 1-3, 5, 8-.
Can I extract just a few pages into one file?
Yes. Choose Extract pages and enter the pages you want. They are collected in the order you type them and delivered as a single PDF.
Are my files uploaded to a server?
No. The split happens inside your browser tab. Your file never leaves your device, which also means the tool keeps working offline once the page has loaded.
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied, not re-rendered or re-compressed, so each output is identical in quality to the original. The combined size of the parts is slightly larger than the source because each file carries its own structure.
Why did I get a ZIP instead of a PDF?
A ZIP appears whenever the split produces more than one file. Browsers cannot start several downloads from one click, so the parts are bundled. A single-file split downloads as a plain PDF.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Remove the password with Unlock PDF first, then split the unlocked copy. SailPDF will not guess or bypass a password.
