How to add page numbers to a PDF

To add page numbers, drop the PDF in, choose where the number should sit and how it should read, then press Add page numbers. The number is drawn on top of the existing page, so the text underneath stays selectable and nothing is re-rendered. You can start the count at any number, which keeps a split document continuous.

1

Add your PDF

Choose a file or drop it in. The page count appears before anything runs.

2

Pick position and format

Corner or centre, plain number, "3 of 12", or "Page 3". Set where counting starts.

3

Apply and download

Press the button. Numbers are stamped on every page and the file downloads.

What this tool does and does not do

Numbers are drawn as text on top of each page, so they stay sharp at any zoom and the document stays searchable. You can choose Helvetica, Times or Courier, in regular, bold, italic or bold italic, and set the size in points. Those three are standard PDF fonts: the file references them instead of embedding them, so picking one adds no weight to your document and needs no font licence. The limit is what those fonts contain — Latin characters only. A document in Japanese, Chinese, Arabic or Korean gets Latin digits, because a matching face would have to be embedded, which is a different trade. Numbers go on every page; if you need different numbering per section, run the tool on each part before merging.

Private by design

Numbering runs in your browser. Your PDF is never sent to a server.

Questions

Can I start numbering at a number other than 1?

Yes. Set the starting number and the first page gets that value. It is useful when numbering a chapter that begins at page 47 of a larger document.

Which positions are available?

Six: the four corners and the top or bottom centre. The margin controls how far the number sits from the edge.

Can I use "3 of 12" instead of just "3"?

Yes. Pick the "of total" format and each page reads as its number followed by the total page count.

Does this work on a scanned PDF?

Yes. The number is drawn on top of the page image, so it appears regardless of whether the document contains real text.

Will page numbers affect the original text?

No. The page content is untouched; the number is an additional layer drawn over it.

Can I number only some pages?

Not in this version — every page is numbered. Split the document first if only part of it should carry numbers.

What font is used?

A standard Helvetica-compatible font, so numbers render identically everywhere. Documents in non-Latin scripts will show Latin digits.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Numbering happens inside your browser tab.
