How to watermark a PDF

To watermark a PDF, drop the file in, type the text or choose a logo, and adjust opacity and rotation until the preview looks right. Press the button and the mark is drawn on every page. It is an overlay: the original text stays selectable, and the watermark is visible in any viewer.

1

Add your PDF

Choose a file or drop it in. The preview shows how the mark will sit on a page.

2

Set the mark

Text or image, opacity, rotation, and whether to stamp once in the centre or tile it.

3

Apply and download

Press Add watermark. Every page is marked and the file downloads.

What this tool does and does not do

A watermark is drawn over the page. It is visible, it survives printing, and it is not removable without editing the file — but it is not encryption and it will not stop anyone determined. For real access control use Protect, which encrypts the document. A text mark can be Helvetica, Times or Courier, in any of the four weights, and those are referenced rather than embedded — so a font choice adds no weight to the file. They cover Latin characters: a Japanese, Chinese or Arabic document gets a Latin face unless the mark itself is an image. Very light opacity looks elegant on screen and can vanish on a cheap printer; 20–30% is the practical floor.

Questions

Can I use an image as a watermark?

Yes. Choose a PNG or JPG — a logo usually works better than text — and set the opacity so it does not hide the content underneath.

What opacity should I use?

20–30% for a visible but unobtrusive mark. Below about 15% it can disappear on a low-quality printer.

Does a watermark protect the document?

No. It labels the document. Anyone with the file can edit or remove an overlay; encryption is what restricts access.

Can I tile the watermark across the page?

Yes. Tiling stamps the mark repeatedly, which is harder to crop out than a single centred mark.

Will the watermark appear when printed?

Yes. It is part of the page content, not a viewer setting.

Can I watermark only some pages?

Not in this version — every page is marked. Split the document first if only part of it should carry the mark.

Does it work on scanned PDFs?

Yes. The mark is drawn on top of the page image.

Can I change the font of a text watermark?

Yes — Helvetica, Times or Courier, in regular, bold, italic or bold italic. Bold is the default because a mark should read as a mark. The fonts are standard PDF faces, so they add nothing to the file size.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Everything happens in your browser.
