Splitting a PDF by page range
A page range selects which pages go into each new file, written as 1-3, 5, 8- where each comma starts a new document. Ranges are inclusive and one-based, so 1-3 means pages one to three. Several outputs arrive as a ZIP because browsers cannot start many downloads from one click.
Reading the range syntax
Three forms cover almost every case: a single page (5), a closed range (1-3), and an open range (8-) that runs to the last page. Commas separate output documents, so 1-3, 4-7, 8- produces three files rather than one file with three selections.
Ranges are one-based and inclusive, which matches what a PDF viewer shows in its page counter. Page 1 of the document is page 1 in the range, always.
Split or extract
Splitting produces several documents, one per range. Extracting produces one document containing every page you listed, in the order given. If you want pages 2, 9 and 14 as a single file, that is an extract, not a split.
The distinction matters for the output: a split of four ranges gives four files and a ZIP, while an extract of four pages gives one file and a direct download.
Why you got a ZIP
Browsers allow one download per click. When a split produces several files, the only way to deliver them together is an archive, so you get a ZIP named after the source document.
A single-page or single-range split skips the archive entirely and downloads a PDF. If you see a ZIP when you expected one file, the range list probably contains more than one segment.
Checks worth doing before you split
Confirm the page count first, because a range that runs past the end is clamped rather than rejected — useful, but it can hide a wrong assumption about the document.
If the document is a scan with no text layer, page numbers in the viewer are the only reliable reference. Trust those over anything printed on the page.
- Check the total page count before typing ranges.
- Use an open range for the tail of the document.
- Extract, rather than split, when the pages belong in one file.
Questions
What does 8- mean in a page range?
It means page 8 through to the last page of the document. Open ranges save you from having to know the exact page count.
Why did splitting give me a ZIP?
Because the split produced more than one file. Browsers cannot start several downloads from a single click, so the parts are bundled into an archive.
Can I split a password-protected PDF?
Not directly. Remove the password first, split the unlocked copy, then protect the results if they still need to be locked.
Does splitting change the pages?
No. Pages are copied into new documents, so text, links and image quality are unchanged.
